Strategic Prevention Framework
Community Assessment
This training will include information on how to create and maintain coalitions and partnerships, assess community needs and resources, analyze problems and goals, and factors affecting them. It will cover data collection and how it helps define problems, resources, and readiness to address needs and gaps.
Planning
This training will provide information on how to undertake a strategic planning process, including developing a theory of change, logic model, strategic plan and action plan. It will identify multiple strategies that will lead to community-level alcohol and other drug reduction outcomes and move coalitions closer to achieving their vision for healthier communities.
Implementation
The goal of this training is to help coalitions understand how to put their plans into action…how to move from planning to oversight, mutual accountability, and monitoring. It will cover how to implement evidence-based strategies and how coalition members must step up and honor commitments made during the planning process to carry out and/or oversee various aspects of the coalition work. Additionally, it will cover how to monitor the implementation of the plan and document community change.
Sustainability
The goal of this training is to help coalitions recognize the importance of a sustainability plan. Within this strategic approach, you are able to maintain the human, social and material resources needed to achieve your coalition’s long-term goals. This type of goal setting guarantees that your coalition can have on-going vitality in its internal structure and process, and ensures viability of its strategies in the community. Coalitions should start planning for sustainability as soon as coalition formation and planning under way.
Environmental Strategies
The goal of this training is to give an overview of Environmental Strategies and the research, discuss the use of communications media to support environmental strategies, and distinguish between Media Advocacy, Social Marketing and Social Norms Misperceptions Campaigns.
Substance Abuse Prevention
Skills Training (SAPST)
The SAPST is an intensive training that was developed by SAMHSA's Center for Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT). It is for entry-level prevention practitioners working in states, jurisdictions, tribes, and communities, and also appropriate for professionals working in related fields, e.g. treatment, mental health etc. The SAPST training is grounded in current research and SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework. It provides knowledge and skills to implement effective, data-driven prevention programs, practices, and policies that reduce behavioral health disparities and improve wellness.
Capacity Building
This training will cover the importance of building membership, developing a solid organizational structure, leadership, and cultural competence. It will also include information on how to mobilize and build capacity within a geographic area to address identified needs.
Logic Model Development
This training will explain how logic models are used to help coalition can carry out a comprehensive community plan to reduce substance use in their community. Participants will learn how to develop this "visual tool" that shows the rationale behind a program or process. Like a roadmap, it tells you where you are, where you are going, and how you will get there. Participants will walk away with a better understanding how to use logic models to visualize how the pieces of a prevention plan fit together and to select prevention appropriate strategies to address substance use problems.
Evaluation
This training provides information on Evaluation, or the systematic collection and analysis of information about program activities, characteristics, and outcomes. Participants will learn that the evaluation step of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) is not just about collecting information, but using that information to improve the effectiveness of a prevention program.
Cultural Responsiveness
This training provides an understanding of cultural competence and its importance in achieving substance abuse reduction that is effective and sustainable. Including all major sectors of your community in your efforts to develop a plan to create population-level change in community rates of substance abuse, will increase your chances of success. Participants will have an opportunity to explore the concept of culture and understand that cultural competence, both at the individual and coalition level, is an active and ongoing process.
Needs Assessment
The objective of this training is to present information to create a comprehensive needs assessment. This training will identify data elements and collection methods necessary to complete a prevention work plan that will be entered into the WITNYS system.
Prevention Ethics
This course addresses the role and application of ethics in substance abuse prevention. Using cases and interactive activities, participants will explore the six standards in the Prevention Code of Ethics and learn to use a 4-step decision-making process to assess, address, and evaluate a range of ethical issues. In addition, five discussion forums, facilitated by an experienced course moderator, provide opportunities for participants to apply lessons learned.
